Laboratory of Polymeric Biomaterials

About Us

Research

In recent years, our group has developed several polymeric materials for biomedical engineering applications, aiming at the development of scaffolds for cell growth from original, biodegradable and bioabsorbable polymeric systems. The intention is to create conditions for the control of the fundamental properties of the scaffolds, aiming at the optimization and generation of artificial tissues. Thus, we propose the development and study of new classes of biodegradable materials, from polyesters and polyanhydrides derived from dehydroalditols, polysaccharides modified by functionalities of interest, and protein materials of various origins (synthetic, derived from techniques of recombinant proteins and peptides extracted from the extracellular matrix), among others. As basic forms of processing, we use electrospinning and 3D printing techniques to create porous materials suitable for the production of cellular scaffolds. These processing techniques are eventually accompanied by crosslinking methods aiming at the three-dimensional stabilization of materials, producing gels and hydrogels. The response of such materials to processes of cell cytotoxicity, adhesion, and proliferation are studied from the culture of basic cell types or stem cell lineages.
