The working definition that the Interunit Postgraduate Program in Bioinformatics at the University of São Paulo uses to understand what Bioinformatics is is in line with the most inclusive interpretation of the term: Bioinformatics is the study of the application of computational and mathematical techniques to the generation and management of information by/for Biology and/or Biotechnology.
In order to specifically meet the broad multidisciplinarity characteristic of this area, a core of basic disciplines was established, allowing students entering the biology area to gain a leveling in exact sciences, and students entering the exact sciences area to gain a leveling in biology. The credit program is complemented by more specific and advanced disciplines, which can be taken at any USP campus, to be defined according to each student's research programs.
Graduates of the program occupy prominent positions in biotechnology companies and in academia, and our program is responsible for training professors who today created and work in the area of bioinformatics at several universities throughout the country.
